I need a Business Plan!

One of the biggest reasons that people don’t do things is that they don’t know how. If they did know how, would that make it easier for them?
That’s definitely true of writing business plans, and although there are scores of books and websites out there which all claim to help, the “business plan” still seems to be a huge challenge. So here’s my simple recipe. And all you need is just three (good old fashioned) sheets of paper.

Growth
Year on year growth of 20% would be great. If you don’t have …

Happy New Year

2010 was a great year in the way that 2009 was not!
Do you remember the depths of recession in 2009? It sorted out the men from the boys! And along with many other businesses which managed to stay the course in 2009 and actually make it into 2010, my business has become leaner and stronger as a result. Truly, 2009 was dire! A fair proportion of my clients went out of business, and I lost about 30% of my income. I have a feeling that I have almost got back …

More Profit in Less Time – The Wednesday Tip
There are arguments for and against the idea of payment by instalments. Some clients don’t like the system, because they find it hard to keep track of which monthly instalment relates to which major purchase. That’s certainly true of businesses (like mine) where clients buy the same services year after year.
On the plus side, it’s good for the business owner, because …

What’s the difference between working for yourself and running your own business?
If you work for yourself, your income takes a holiday when you take a holiday. You don’t own a business, you own a job!

More Profit in Less Time – The Wednesday Tip
During the Falklands campaign in the early 1980s the term yomping became widely understood. The Royal Marines whilst crossing rough terrain would run for a few minutes, walk (purposefully) for a few minutes, and continue with this alternating pattern. That way they were able to cross great distances most effectively.

A similar process works with businesses. You’ve heard the expression Power Nap. …

Friday Feedback
Some very clever people fail to run successful businesses. And some people have remarkable luck in running successful businesses, seemingly against all of the odds. The thing that sets them apart is persistence.
Edison would not have invented the light bulb had he not been persistent. Major drug companies would never develop new medicines if they were not persistent.  Sylvester Stallone would still be a nobody had he not been persistent. If you don’t know about the man behind the roles, read Sylvester Stallone’s story here.
And just keep on keeping …

More Profit in Less Time – The Wednesday Tip
Do you go to business lunches? Do they bite into your working day? I sort of made a rule not to do them. It’s not just the hour (and more) while you’re there, it’s the one hour to get there and the one hour to get back. As part of my role at Proactive still involves Production, I need to revisit my old rule about no business lunches!

What is the difference between working for yourself and running your own business?
When you work for yourself, your income takes a holiday when you take a holiday. If you run your own business, you are still earning, even when you’re away. Deep down, do you want to really work for yourself, or do you really want to run your own business? If it’s the latter, now’s the time to update your plans with a new concept – staff!

At a recent networking meeting I was suprised to meet people (yet again) who are running small businesses and who come along to networking meetings without business cards. These days, business cards are so cheap that they should be given to everybody in your organisation. Imagine what would happen if the filing clerk, or the van driver had their own cards. They would want to give them out to all their friends and family:
“Look, I’ve got my own card . . . here . . . take one!”
That way you …

I’m a morning person, I don’t know why that is, it’s just something in my genes. The alarm goes off (no matter how early) and instantaneously I get up and set about the tasks of the day. I love to get things done, and by mid afternoon I have accomplished a lot and then tend to move on to more leisurely tasks.
It’s almost as if I am hot wired to spontaneously get on and do things. Conversely, I cannot cope with beach and bar holidays, because they are too leisurely. …
