A weekend mix of the trivial and the profound
Google’s offices in central London played host to HackCamp over the weekend of 12/13 June 2010 and I was there! To hack! And for those of you who don’t know, in software developer circles the verb “to hack” means “to write code” or “to program” or generally “to develop software” and it has no connection with what the press …

Tuesday Financial Focus
Two days to go, and Windows 7 will become widely available. If you want to wait another 8 months, Google’s Chrome OS will also be on the market. Apparently, it’s already here as a Beta if you want to try it out!
Oddly, the download page says “Chrome OS is not related to Google. Service provided by SUSE Studio”. Anyway, I have downloaded a copy and will have …

I have been at work today! There have been a few external problems in the last week or so, and that has meant a less productive week than normal. I’ll be at work again on Sunday, focusing on production. Today I was working on IT, on our new Mail Server.
This week’s distractions were . . .
Royal Mail is getting worse.
Webmail phishing has hit the headlines.
Companies House have botched …

Here’s a screen shot that I took last month . . .
And no, it has not been doctored!
As part of our SEO campaign we blog on a daily basis, and periodically we check how we are doing. Typing my trade name “proactive” into Google tells me a lot about how things are going.
On that occasion this blog was ranked 2nd by Google. It just shows that regular changes …

The spam filters on my Yahoo business accounts work pretty well and, because I change my e-mail address every year, they have less spam to worry about. Have you thought about that? On the 1st of January each year I update my address. The 09 in the current one will be dropped and will be replaced by a 10.
My contacts and clients are getting used to this annual …
I am moderately interested in the story that Google plans to launch their own OS in direct competition to Microsoft. I do not share a lot of the hysteria this week and it’s good to see some balanced reporting going on. I was alerted by @jangles to this report on ZD Net and it raises interesting issues – not that I agree with it all – but it demonstrates that we should not rush to conclusions.
I am not a great fan of Microsoft, but I do not want them …
I have heard it said, though I remember not where, that we can leave nothing behind when we die, other than our glorious monuments to our lives. And if you think back over past centuries, a clear pattern emerges as to who had the most glorious monuments and where the wealth was to be found.
In early history it was the Egyptians. And the monuments they left behind, the pyramids, still stand to this day as testimony to their one time greatness. Then it was the Church, and their collection …
How do you measure the performance of your web site? How do I measure mine? And if you use an SEO service (search engine optimisation service) how do you know if they have actually made any difference?
You need to measure things before and after if you want to be able to make any sort of comparison. And if you are using SEO you had better know where you stand at the beginning in order to see if they made an improvement. I do know that the BBC web site …
When I was a little boy, there were three channels on television, BBC1, BBC2 and ITV. Nowadays, I can’t tell you how many channels I might be able to watch as there are over 1,000 on my Hotbird satellite system alone! And are they any good? “Probably not” is the answer to that one! The only thing I have Hotbird for is JSTV.
In any case, this year all of the members of my family seem to be spending more time sitting in front of their computers, exploring things on …
