Health and Exercise – The Rewards

I’m the same as you. I go through episodes of healthy eating and exercise, and then I regress and end up taking a couple of steps backwards for every step forward. If we’re not careful, a self reinforcing feedback loop can arise and we all end up back where we started, if not worse off than before!

However, around 10% of people readily have the perseverance to overcome this dilemma.
It is said that “WeightWatchers” (not that I’ve ever been there) thrives by providing repeat services to the 90% of people who …

Personal Development on Sunday
This evening I watched the programme on Channel 4 about Darwin. Science demonstrated rather well, if a little lacking in conviction. Convincing enough for me, a scientific person at heart, but not convincing enough for the group of teenagers who still think that “evolution” contradicts their teachings. Presumably they also think that the world is flat and is still at the centre of the universe.
Sometimes it’s …

Personal Development on Sunday
Now it’s not exactly cold just yet, but I was out early this morning and I noticed it. And like the rest of you, I cannot see me getting to the park on a cold, dark, wintery morning. So I am developing the alternative keep fit routine.
The one I can do at home.

I have a cross trainer and a bit of floor space, and that means …

Personal Development on Sunday
It’s been about 10 weeks now! No chocolate, no desserts and a more balanced approach to everything else! I am down from 83.6kg to 80.1kg, and my pace when running is much improved.
However, I seem to be needing more sleep than usual!
For many years I have been aware of the condition called hyperthymia. Condoleeza Rice and Margaret Thatcher have it. It’s usually cited as the reason …

Personal Development on Sunday
As much as I have enjoyed this blog’s exploratory trips through World Affairs every Sunday, the system changes today and there’s now a new approach to weekends! Saturdays will continue to be about personal adventures and the enjoyment of life, a focus (if you like) on happiness and psychology, and blog posts on Sundays will henceforth have a health and fitness flavour!
And today I excelled at …

Lifestyle Saturday
This week Guy Kawasaki pointed me to this report in the Huffington Post which says chocolate is good for you!
I’m sure that if you look, there will be another report somewhere that says chocolate is bad. I gave up chocolate (and more) about 8 weeks ago! In that time I have lost 2 kilos in weight and I’m on track to run my first marathon next year. So …

Monday Muse
Given any circuit, I always run anti-clockwise and I always run on the left. That’s the way they do it at the Olympics.

However, doing it that way I hardly ever see the people whose habits mimic mine. In my local parks I do see lots of people running the other way, clockwise, and I wonder why they do that!
To me it feels like they are always trying to catch a second hand which is constantly turning away from them. The way I do it, at least once every minute …

More Profit in Less Time – The Wednesday Tip
Fit and healthy people perform better at work. If you want to become more productive and more profitable, ask yourself if you are overweight and eating the wrong sort of food. I am trying to stick to a Japanese diet. By that I don’t mean that I am on a diet, I simply mean that my daily intake of food has to support my objective to live a longer, healthier life.

Do you struggle to reach for stuff at work if it’s high …

Lifestyle Saturday
A couple of weeks ago I decided to add a bit more structure to this blog, and you may have noticed the appearance of sub headings and tags like “Lifestyle Saturday”. I was quite surprised to discover that adding topics to my blogging has made the whole experience even more enjoyable.
The same thing goes for a lot of leisure activities which when structured, are a lot more rewarding. Have you ever been to the gym, done a serious workout, and felt all the better for doing it? When we …
