Technology Thursday
Two things that I really enjoy are public speaking and messing around with computers. I am both an extrovert and a geek. So I am very pleased that PresentationCamp London is on the horizon and (amongst other things) will attempt to answer the modern question “how do you manage an effective presentation in this era of high tech”?
That’s especially relevant if you’ve ever had the experience that I’ve …

I am moderately interested in the story that Google plans to launch their own OS in direct competition to Microsoft. I do not share a lot of the hysteria this week and it’s good to see some balanced reporting going on. I was alerted by @jangles to this report on ZD Net and it raises interesting issues – not that I agree with it all – but it demonstrates that we should not rush to conclusions.
I am not a great fan of Microsoft, but I do not want them …

Technology Thursday

It’s already available to download, but that has not stopped the good people at Firefox from staging a Firefox 3.5 launch party on Monday 6 July 2009 – in a pub near Liverpool Street Station. I became a Firefox convert about 18 months ago and these days find it very odd when I have to use IE7 on somebody else’s computer.

Do you remember the Microsoft adverts on the Tube a couple of years ago, telling us that if we didn’t upgrade our version of Office, that we were all …

Lifestyle Saturday
The television is becoming redundant! That was one of the conversations I had at #tweetcamp earlier today. It’s certainly true in our house, that we spend more time watching things on the internet rather than on TV. And that means that there are three people sitting in front of three monitors watching (and more annoyingly, listening to) three different videos.

So, lately we have had to start using headphones. And then that led to more discussions about headsets, and VoIP and Skype. So as well as our two ordinary sets …

How transparent are your customers and your suppliers? Do they tell you what you really need to know?
How transparent is this government? And what do you think of the recent enforced transparency on MPs expenses?
Oxford University will be hosting a Barcamp on 26 July 2009 dedicated uniquely to the question of transparency. Wouldn’t it be good if you knew everything that your “suppliers” held on your file? It would be good for us too at Proactive. How many times do clients and suppliers have debates about who knew what …

Technology Thursday

In the old days, I used to code HTML in Notepad, then WinEdit, and latterly Crimson Editor. It’s been a useful skill to have, but I am beginning to lose what little HTML skill I had.
This blog is so easy for me to maintain that I hardly write any HTML any more. No more code in the editor, no more FTP issues, and no more of those repetitive upload, download, rework exercises that I used to go through. WordPress has made life easy for me.
And so …

World Affairs on Sunday
Mini Barcamp Fukuoka is taking place on Tuesday 5 May 2009 in the evening. It’s going to be the first Barcamp in Fukuoka, and it’s going back to the roots of traditional barcamps. To help all of the visitors appreciate what that means a very detailed guide has been set out on the Barcamp web site.

When you really get into the spirit of a barcamp, it’s easy to tell everybody about the things that interest you. And often, that’s the things you’re doing in your side project. …
